The pre-departure party. From left to rightaround the circle, Paul, Forrest, Laura (by the washing machine), Aimee, Paul's girlfriend whose name I forget, Juli, and Eric.
Standing Room Only
Group shot on the deck of the ferry before leaving Wakkanai. That's Eric on the left, Aimee front and center, and Celia hugging Juli.
The wake of the ferry as we leave Wakkanai
A russian boat. These are a frequent sight at this port.
Juli's belt buckle lets folks know where she stands.
Arriving at a fog-shrouded Rebun
An interesting shade of blue
This was just kind of a cool picture
Our campground. I shared that greenish tent on the left with Eric. Sadly, I got the windward side, so once the sun rose (just prior to 4am) the wind blew the side of the tent over my face about once a second. I didn't sleep long after that.
Being up early said morning, I got to see just how much damage these ravens (or big-ass crows if they're crows) caused to the few items of food we had left accessible. It hadn't lasted long.
After about an hour of trying to sleep in the van, I went to the lakeside dock and snapped this picture.
The campsite from the parking lot
There was a lovely walk up a nearby mountain, and everyone was still asleep, so I hiked up and snapped this picture of a sheltered inlet.
...and this one of the hills
...and this one of the campsite
...and this one of the smaller of the two towns on the island.
... and this one up the coast a ways
A child's sandbox
The Hello Kitty family pleads with you to "Speed Down"
While the evil shovel cuts the cord to... something.
This is the beach we had a bonfire on the night before. Damn that's a lot of shells.
A closeup. They were worn nice and smooth, so they weren't sharp to sit on at all.
And here's where the fire itself was located.
I have no idea who these sparkly kids are, but they're pointing out something for the local elementary school PTA. My best guess is something like the two-person advantage starting point, if you can make any sense out of that.
Another view of the coast
Some rolling green hills. Just as I was leaving the weather was starting to clear
Some seals basking in the shallows
A shot from the car window
The Queen Soya, the ferry that would take me back to Hokkaido
On the way back I got a glimpse of Rishiri through the mist.
