The town of Hamatonbetsu

A nighttime shot from my window
When leaving town heading south, this road diverges from the main one just before the tunnel and heads out around this scenic penninsula rather than through it.
The road's closed during the winter. You've seen lots of shots of this penninsula from the Easahi side, but this was my first time actually driving out on it.
Here's the port of the tiny little town on the border of Hamatonbetsu and Esashi
The lighthouse at the tip of the penninsula
...and out into the Sea of Okhotsk
The friendly little turtle tells everyone to slow down.
Hamaton's historic Main Streer/Downtown/the entire town
Some larches changing colors for the fall just outside of town
.Back when winter was fresh I took this picture of snow on a bush near my apartment during a walk to the lake.
Now that is a tiny car.
Oh the weather outside is frightful...
This wasn't actually Hamaton (it's from a rest stop on the expressway to Asahikawa), but I didn't know where else ot put it and I really like the picture.
My parents wanted a picture of me and Heather, so here it is.
The snow piled up in the office parking lot one sunny day.
A nice sunset as I was getting off from work at 4:30
The coastal flatland covered by snow along the road to Esashi
These next sunset pictures I took while driving around after work one day, so I thought I'd share.

The snow pile built up this year behind City Hall. For some reason they decided to plow a track wide enough for a vehical spiraling towards the top.
While driving around the back roads of Hamatonbetsu (and even some main roads), abandoned farms are a common sight. The winters here do a number on them too.
Here's another one.
These were all around the same area (hey, it was cold. I didn't want to get out of the car more often). Here's another angle.
I made this one my desktop picture
This building was practically buried by the snow.
A lovely snowscape.
And another one set against some dark clouds.
Don't play chicken with cattle. Nobody wins.
Snow-covered mountains as seen on the road to Shimotonbetsu.
Runoff from the melting snow on the hills cuts a path through the snow next to the road.
That same stream.
A storm out in the Sea of Okhotsk made for a rougher beach than I've yet seen here. Still not much, but it was nice to see constant whitecaps.
And the water crashing over the anti-erosion barriers.
Spring is coming.
This used to be a railroad bridge, back when the trains were still publicly owned.
The village of Shimotonbetsu.
Another view of the sunset from my house.
The sun behind a TV antennae.
